Western History X is a 1998 film directed by Tony Kaye and written by David McKenna. It stars Edward Norton in the lead role, and co-stars Edward Furlong, Beverly D'Angelo, Jennifer Lien, Ethan Suplee, Fairuza Balk, Avery Brooks, Elliott Gould, and Stacy Keach.
Synopsis
This film tells the story of Derek Vinyard (Norton), a white supremacist, who, fallowing a difficult prison phrase, learns the futility of hatred & attempt to save his immature brother from either charted inside his footsteps.
Western History X touches in such controversial & "politically incorrect" topics as racism, white privilege, affirmative action, illegal immigration, the continued being of NeoNazi hate groups within Western society, a exploitation of vulnerable youth of tons races by gangs, intra- & inter-racial violence & more topics that however split U.s. society down the middle.
Controversy
A independent arguing all over a film centered around director Tony Kaye's tries to try to dislodge his title from either a credits, prefering instead to invoke a nom de guerre Humpty Dumpty. Kaye alleged that his logical thinking for this was Edward Norton's re-editing of the film to give himself more screen time. A Director's Guild of America ultimately denied Kaye the right to remove his name from the production, reasoning that Kaye had placed ads in Variety attacking the film, thus violating Guild rules regarding the right to invoke the pseudonym. Kaye proceeded to sue a Directors Guild & New Line Cinema, claiming they experienced violated his First Amendment rights.
